Assistant Editor

The Assistant Editor works in the communications department to produce digital and print content that engages, entertains and informs AMA members, prospective members and the motorcycling community, with the goals of retaining current members and increasing AMA membership.

Job responsibilities:
• Develop, pitch, write and edit features, interviews and news stories for monthly American Motorcyclist magazine and americanmotorcyclist.com website
• Write, edit and post press releases on a variety of motorcycle-related topics, including competition, government relations and member activity
• Write and edit exhibit and marketing materials for AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame
• Prepare, edit and distribute e-newsletters
• Produce content for AMA social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube
• Help maintain editorial calendar for American Motorcyclist magazine
• Serve as an initial staff contact for member email and telephone inquiries regarding AMA editorial properties
• Source photography in support of AMA editorial
• Cover AMA events and other events on site and on deadline, and produce timely reports for web, press releases, social media and other channels
• Complete long-term AMA projects, as assigned

Knowledge, skills and abilities:
• Produce high volume of content across multiple communications channels
• Think independently and thrive in a deadline-driven environment
• Operate motorcycles with high degree of safety and skill in demanding environments and situations, both on-road and off-road
• Speak and write knowledgeably about motorcycling and its history
• Tolerate dust, fumes and noise
• Lift up to 25 pounds; push or pull heavier objects
• Travel domestically as assigned

Qualifications:
• Four-year college degree and one to three years of experience in a related position
• Proficient in word processing, photo editing, video editing, content management systems, spreadsheets, presentation, database management, layout and design
• Excellent written and verbal command of English language
• Superior proofreading skills
• Understanding of journalism ethics and Associated Press style
• Ability to grasp broad goals and tailor messages in line with them
• Resourceful, with outstanding critical thinking and research skills
