The American Motorcyclist Association, the premier membership association dedicated to promoting the motorcycling lifestyle and protecting the future of motorcycling, is seeking an experienced professional for the position of Communications Coordinator.

The AMA Government Relations Communications Coordinator disseminates the AMA advocacy and government relations message through several communications media. Plans and produces magazine stories, press releases, direct member communication and other writing projects relating to government relations.

The coordinator will work with GRD staff to edit and produce advocacy campaign messaging while working with Communications staff to ensure GRD messaging matches overall AMA style. The coordinator will work with GRD staff to produce social media content highlighting advocacy efforts within the rights portion of the AMA webpage.

Job responsibilities

  • Serves as government affairs editor for American Motorcyclist
  • Assists with writing and putting together American Motorcyclist magazine, writing, and writing news releases
  • Assists with writing and editing GRD advocacy campaign messaging
  • Analyzes and digests complex government-related issues and writes news stories and releases to enhance AMA’s message while following AP Stylebook
  • Manages and oversees editorial style consistency in AMA-produced media with respect to AP Stylebook, as well as AMA-specific exceptions
  • Shoots photos, and writes features and hard news.
  • Completes detailed analysis of variety of issues resulting in proper AMA messaging from the Communications Department
  • Interprets and applies AMA positions on wide-ranging issues, in addition to often having hand in formulating those positions
  • Works with Communications and GRD to decide what issues should go in Government section of magazine
  • Communicates with external and internal contacts including public and AMA staff
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or related field
  • Five to seven years relevant work experience with multiple deadlines across multiple projects, including three years experience in writing and editing and three years motorcycling experience, concurrent with writing experience
  • Motorcycle license or experience is helpful
